Notice Board

  • The next Gracie Games Day will be on Saturday, 4th July 2026; Students aged 7 and under (Tiny Titans, Little Grapplers): 2.00pm-3.00pm; Students aged 8 and above (Jr Grapplers & Black Belt club): 3.00pm-4.00pm; ALL regular kids' classes will be CANCELLED.

The friendly environment of Watford Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is one of its most distinguishing characteristics. While most other Martial Arts schools promote an egotistical “tough guy” environment, which can be very unwelcoming and dangerous for the students, we are very concerned with making each and every trip to our school safe, fun and encouraging for all students, especially those with little or no experience. We expect all students to display the utmost respect and courtesy towards one another and to maintain safety as their first priority. Students who do not follow this code of conduct are not welcome at Watford Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

Watford Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy is run by Ben Tippen, a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt under Gracie University and Yanxiu (Vera) Tippen, a Purple Belt under Ben Tippen.

Although Gracie Jiu-Jitsu consists of over 2000 techniques, studies of real fights conducted by members of the Gracie Family have shown that 40 techniques have been used more often and with greater success than all the other techniques combined. Gracie Fundamentals is dedicated to the mastery of these 40 essential techniques. Absolutely no experience is necessary to get started; this program is specifically designed to be enjoyed by any new student regardless of age, gender, or athletic ability.

GIVE YOUR CHILD THE GIFT OF CONFIDENCE!

We will teach your child to use verbal assertiveness to deter bullies and several non-violent self-defence techniques to stay safe if physically assaulted. Importantly, we don’t teach how to punch or kick like other Martial Art Schools in Watford, since this often does more harm than good. Instead, we use leverage-based control holds to neutralize threats without violence. Numerous school districts have embraced the defensive nature of the Gracie BullySafe techniques as a reasonable, nonviolent response to bullying and some even host Gracie BullySafe classes on campus! The bottom line is: we will prepare your child to defend themselves against bullies without turning them into one.

Most Martial Arts Schools let you try one or two classes before signing you up. However, we prefer you try it for 10 days, completely FREE with no obligation to join! Our trial is designed to:

  • Allow you to fully experience our classes
  • Learn about our programs and curriculum in great detail
  • Meet your instructor
  • Connect with everyone else in the class
  • Allow you to make a fully educated decision about our school before signing up!

Common Questions

Can I get a refund on my membership fees?2024-05-06T15:39:07+01:00

We are very sorry but we cannot give refunds on membership fees unless you have an email showing you cancelled your membership and you were charged in error.  Just like with all other gyms, we cannot give refund because you havent attended.  It is the students responsibility to cancel their membership by emailing [email protected]

I do not want to get hurt2019-11-30T15:17:06+01:00

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is for everyone not just young males that like rough and tumble. All the moves you learn are done so slowly that there is almost no chance of getting hurt. We also make sure you are matched with a partner that fits the type of person you are so you get the most out of the training. Above all it is very important everyone has a fun time, which is the best environment to learn in.

I can’t afford the fees.2024-05-06T15:41:28+01:00

Please speak to us as there may be an opportunity to train in exchange for services such as cleaning, admin work etc.  We cannot guarantee we will always have this exchange available.

My child isn’t being bullied.2019-02-10T14:21:08+01:00

Even if your child hasn’t been bullied it is no reason not to prepare them for it. Eventually there will come a time when someone at school will try and take advantage of or be unkind to your little one. If you child trains with us they will be ready when this time comes.[/toggle]
[toggle title=”My child is tough and doesn’t need GJJ.”]There is always someone tougher than you but if you think there is little chance your child will need to have GJJ to stop bullying there is another reason for them to train with us. We don’t just teach your child to fight, we also teach them to be good human beings. We don’t create bullies we teach our students to respect each other and use their power to help others.

I need to go to the gym first to get fit then I will join.2019-02-10T14:20:41+01:00

You do not need to go to the gym to get fit first. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is a fantastic way to get healthy and fit plus compared to the gym it is great fun.

I am a woman and I do not want to practice GJJ with a Man I do not know2019-02-10T14:20:19+01:00

Just like the Gracie Academy HQ in California we have a no barrier policy between men and women. However we understand this can be a problem for women who are not used to this art. If this is the case we recommend you start with the women’s only self-defence classes then, as you build confidence in these kinds of moves, when you are ready, you can move to the main adults classes and learn the full GJJ system. Please bear in mind the women’s classes do not include the full martial art just the moves that will protect you from a sexual predator, however these moves are an excellent intro to the full system.

Why do I need to learn to fight? I have never been in a fight and probably never will!2019-11-30T15:16:42+01:00

You may think you will never use the skills we teach but in fact you will be using them every time you speak. How? Confidence! By knowing you can comfortable defend yourself, your confidence will increase a huge amount and this will allow you to become a better Father/Mother, Husband/Wife, Business Person, Parent & Person.

We have had a fantastic experience at Watford Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy. The classes for young children are exceptionally well structured, engaging, and age-appropriate. Instructor Ben Tippen does an outstanding job of creating a fun, positive, and supportive environment while teaching valuable self-defence skills.

What sets these classes apart is the strong focus on character development alongside martial arts training. Children learn important life values such as respect, discipline, confidence, responsibility, and kindness, which are reinforced throughout the programme.

Ben is patient, encouraging, and excellent at connecting with the children, helping them build confidence while developing practical skills.

I would highly recommend Watford Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy to any parent looking for a safe, professional, and inspiring activity for their child.

As a woman and beginner I would really recommend this place. If you ever wanted to try bjj and felt intimidated or feared being injured (most beginners in bjj give up within months due to injury sustained during sparring ) then this is your place.

Here there is a clear detailed curriculum with emphasis on technique, safety, inclusion and respect for each other . You can practice the techniques as much as you want and only when a bit more experienced you can start doing classes during which you can test your skills but still in a more gentle way than full on sparring. This systematic and gradual progression can be criticised by other schools (“sparring is the only way to learn bjj“) and I get it, but I want to learn safely and don’t want to get injured by being thrown into the deep end.

There are classes virtually every day and the women self defence on Tuesdays and Thursdays are truly mind blowing (by their effectiveness ) and every girl and young (an older ) woman should come !

Bjj is one of the most difficult martial art to learn. Here you will do it with method and fun and it is, like many other academies, a great friendly and supportive community.

I read the reviews before joining and read the one about cleanliness. I have to say the mat and place in general are always spotless. It never smells. The mat is clean. The rules about etiquette and “dress code “ are respected.

Heidi at the desk will go the extra length to help and make things as easy and pleasant as possible - and she keeps everything ultra clean and tidy !

I would highly recommend to anyone who wants to try .

Extremely clean and well managed school with exceptional kindness from all members of staff and students. Unfortunately I had to leave the school due to travel distance and a family issue but hopefully I can perhaps return someday. This is the best place to begin your BJJ journey if you're a beginner. What I love most about this school is the structure you're provided with. Ben Tippen has worked very hard to achieve this and the structure from America to the UK. Fantastic reception staff also and on point. Five stars

Our kids have been going here for three years and they’ve both learned so many excellent techniques to defend themselves as well as learn excellent character building skills.

I've been going to classes here for about 9 months and I think it is a brilliant club. I started as a complete beginner and have found the classes to be really good. Great instructors, well-organised, and a welcoming atmosphere.

There is a clear curriculum, techniques are well drilled and taught thoroughly, and after a certain number of classes more advanced sessions open up - like combatives training and sparring. I have found the structure very supportive.

Highly recommended.

Relaxed and friendly. My 8yo son and 6yo daughter attend 2 sessions a week. I love that I can watch in class or nip next door and get a coffee. The lessons are 1 hour and you can change which lessons you attend each week. My kids go to junior grapplers, there are 5 lessons a week. Ben is the main instructor and is awesome, he gives great messages/ pep talks on anti bullying and how to deal with it and takes genuine interest in his students. My kids love it.
