Happy New Year!!
2014 was a great year for Watford Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Being the year that we opened the club, we couldn’t be happier with how it went. Starting with our first adult’s class back in January of 12 people, we now have 75 active students enrolled in our club. Throughout the year our students have shown great commitment to learning the art and have contributed greatly to the warm, welcoming environment that we were aiming for. We ended 2014 with a total of 24 promotions – 13 adult promotions from White Belt to Blue Belt and 11 children’s promotions from White Belt to White-Yellow Belt plus one to Yellow Belt.
Students in our Bullyproof classes – Little Champs class (ages 5-7) and Jr. Grapplers class (ages 8-13) – have done really well this year. The Little Champs thoroughly enjoy playing our Bullyproof games. It has been a joy to see their confidence grow and their enthusiasm continue throughout the year.
Our Jr. Grapplers have also show great progress, from takedowns to punch defenses to intricate moves like the triangle choke. They have all been working extremely hard to become Bullyproof kids.
To reward their focus and diligence in class as well as their efforts to practice good character building outside of class, we held six Gracie Games Days. Gracie Games Day is a day when the kids come to just have fun and play different games – the most popular games are War Balls, Cops and Robbers, and Jump the Snake and of course dodgeball!
Our adult’s Combatives class has also taken off with great success. We’re really pleased to have seen a great growth in our numbers. Many of our members earned stripes on their white belts over the course of the year, and 13 of our students successfully passed the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Blue Belt Qualification test and earned their Blue Belts.
With our growing number of Blue Belts, we launched the Master Cycle class in September. The class has been an exciting new addition to our program – offering not only more advanced and intricate techniques but also adding no gi training along with sparring, with and without gloves.
All this progress and growth has been wonderful and we’re really looking forward to new adventures in 2015.
Classes resume on January 3rd, 2015 with Little Champs from 2:15 – 3:15, Jr. Grapplers from 3:15 – 4:15, and adult Combatives class from 4:30 – 5:30. Our first Master Cycle class of the new year will be on Sunday, January 4th at 10:30 a.m. Our first week back in session will also include the first Gracie Games Day of the year on Sunday, January 4th from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.
Our club has truly grown from a place where people just showed up to train to a community that works together, supports one another’s progress, and has fun in the process. All of us here at Watford Gracie Jiu-Jitsu are excited to welcome 2015 and we look forward to seeing you on the mats!
